ORGAN DONATION

BELOW IS AN EMAIL THAT I SENT OUT ABOUT THREE YEARS AGO.  I THOUGHT IT WAS TIME TO SEND THIS OUT AGAIN TO MAKE EVERYONE AWARE OF ORGAN DONATION!  TODAY IS THE 5TH ANNIVERSARY OF MY DAD'S TRANSPLANT AND I AM STILL SO THANKFUL.  (I ALWAYS CALL HIM ON THIS DAY AND WISH HIM A HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!) PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO READ THIS AND THEN TAKE THE TIME TO MAKE YOUR WISHES KNOWN ABOUT ORGAN DONATION!    I LOVE YOU DADDY!!!

Hi everyone.  I was working out the other day and when I work out I usually read a magazine to keep my mind off of the time.  I came across an article that really touched me.  The article was titled "Second Chance".  It was about a young father of four (two sets of identical twin girls...wow!!)  who received a heart transplant.  The reason this article touch me so much is because, as many of you may know, my dad had a liver transplant two years ago.

Being Thanksgivng, a time for giving and thanking, I thought this would be the right time for me to send out this email.  When my dad was sick and waiting for a transplant, it was really hard.  I prayed and prayed that my dad would get a liver and stay with us and at the same time I felt guilty praying that prayer because I knew that someone else's loved one would have to die to make that happen.  Well, our prayers were answered on June 17, 2004 when we got the call that there was a liver for my dad.  I was so happy and scared at the same time.  I prayed for my dad, the doctors and also I prayed and prayed for the donor's family.  Now my dad is a new person.  He's doing wonderful!!!  He's alive and able to enjoy his six kids, 22 grandkids and 3 great grandkids.  I still, to this day, pray for that donor family often.

The main reason for this email is to make you aware of organ donation.  Here is a website that you can go to to learn more about it, get questions answered and print out an organ donation card.  The website is www.organdonor.gov .  Here are some tips also:

  • Declare your wish on your driver's license.
  • Join the donor registry if your state has one.
  • Include donation in your advance directives, will, and living will.
  • Tell your family. They can be your advocate should you become a donor candidate.
  • Tell your physician, faith leader, and friends.
  • Complete a donor card and carry it in your wallet.
I think the most important of these is to let your wishes be known to your family so they know that you want to donate your organs.  Please consider organ donation.  You have the chance to give someone else the gift of life!

And please...Don't take your organs to Heaven...Heaven knows we need them here!!

May you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving.  I know I have a lot to be thankful for!!
God Bless!
Linda Corcoran
